To the People of Saint Peter’s Parish:
Praised be Jesus Christ! I cannot tell you how honored, humbled, and grateful I am to have been appointed by Bishop Matano as your Parochial Administrator and to have the privilege of serving you as a priest of Jesus Christ! My sincerest thanks to Father John Gagnier and to all of the other priests who have served you faithfully throughout the years.
I know that in just over a month I will have the opportunity to meet you all and introduce myself in person. But for those who are interested, here is a brief biography.
I grew up in Livonia, NY (where my parents still live) as the oldest of four children. I first started thinking seriously about the priesthood during my undergraduate studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville, and so when I graduated from college, I immediately entered formation for the Diocese of Rochester. After one year in our former Diocesan house of formation, Becket Hall, Bishop Clark sent me to complete my seminary training at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy. There I had so many wonderful experiences of the universality of the Church, and after years of prayer and study, I was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Matano in June of 2014.
During my first year of priesthood, I actually returned to Rome in order to complete a graduate degree in dogmatic theology. Since June of 2015, I have been serving as Parochial Vicar in Blessed Trinity and Saint Patrick parishes in Tioga county, near Binghamton.
Know that as I complete my responsibilities at my current parish, I am already praying for you and for your intentions. In your kindness, please remember me in your prayers as well. And let us all pray for Father Gagnier as he assists me and the entire parish during this time of transition.
May Our Blessed Mother Mary watch over us all, keep us safe, and lead us to her Divine Son! In her Immaculate Heart,
Fr. Peter Van Lieshout
